Lords of Acid

Antwerp, Belgium - 1988–present

From the sweaty underground clubs of late-'80s Belgium to stages across the globe - the provocative, uncompromising story of acid house's most notorious act.

Origins

In the late 1980s, Belgium was ground zero for a new sound. New beat - a slowed-down, hypnotic mutation of electronic body music and acid house - was shaking the foundations of European club culture. It was in this fertile underground that producer Praga Khan (Maurice Engelen, born 7 January 1959 in Herselt, Belgium), together with Olivier Adams and vocalist Jade 4U (Nikkie van Lierop), created something that would outlast the scene itself.

In 1988, they released I Sit on Acid - a track that fused the raw, squelchy pulse of the Roland TB-303 with sexually charged vocals and an unapologetic attitude. It became an instant underground sensation across Europe and laid the blueprint for everything Lords of Acid would become: provocative, pulsating, and impossible to ignore.

The name "Lords of Acid" wasn't just a band name - it was a statement. Drawing on the double meaning of "acid" (both the psychedelic substance and the acid house genre born from the 303's squelch), the project positioned itself at the nexus of hedonism and electronic innovation.

Discography

1991 Lust

Their debut full-length on Caroline Records was a manifesto of sexual liberation set to acid house beats. Spawning singles like I Sit on Acid, Rough Sex and I Must Increase My Bust, the album became an underground hit in both Europe and the United States, establishing Lords of Acid as the undisputed provocateurs of electronic music.

1994 Voodoo-U

The sophomore album took a darker turn, incorporating industrial dance elements alongside their acid house foundations. Featuring vocals by Ruth McArdle (known as Lady Galore and Cherrie Blue), Voodoo-U included the cult classic Crablouse and cemented the band's reputation for pushing boundaries both sonically and lyrically.

1997 Our Little Secret

The third album refined the Lords formula with tighter production and anthemic hooks. It was followed by the B-side compilation Heaven Is an Orgasm (1998) and remix album Expand Your Head (1999) - showcasing the depth of material the band had accumulated in just a decade.

2001 Farstucker

A bold departure. Farstucker introduced heavier rock influences into the Lords of Acid sound, featuring vocals by Deborah Ostrega. The album divided fans but showcased Praga Khan's refusal to repeat himself, blending live instrumentation with electronic production in ways that predated the electrorock wave by years.

2012 Deep Chills

After a decade-long hiatus from the studio, Lords of Acid returned with Deep Chills featuring DJ Mea on vocals. The album included Paranormal Energy (with Ghost Adventures' Zak Bagans) and Pop That Tooshie, proving the band could still deliver the goods in the EDM era.

2018 Pretty in Kink

Funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign, the sixth studio album featured Marieke Bresseleers on vocals and was released on Metropolis Records. It marked a return to the classic Lords of Acid formula - filthy, funky and defiantly uncensored.

TBA Acid Reign

The upcoming seventh studio album will feature former Butcher Babies vocalist Carla Harvey, announced in January 2025 as the new voice of Lords of Acid. With Harvey's powerhouse vocals and groundbreaking stage presence joining Praga Khan's production, the next chapter promises to be the most ferocious yet.

On Screen

Beyond the club circuit, Lords of Acid's music has soundtracked some of Hollywood's most iconic films and games. Praga Khan and Olivier Adams, recording as The Immortals, composed the legendary Mortal Kombat album in 1994 - the "MORTAL KOMBAT!" chant remains one of the most recognizable in gaming history.

Legacy

Over nearly four decades, Lords of Acid have sold millions of records, toured the world relentlessly, and influenced countless electronic, industrial and alternative artists. Their refusal to censor themselves - musically or thematically - has made them icons of artistic freedom in an increasingly sanitized industry.

Praga Khan's prolific output extends far beyond Lords of Acid. Under his many aliases - including Channel X, Digital Orgasm and The Immortals - he has shaped the sound of Belgian electronic music from the new beat era through techno, trance and beyond. His solo hit Injected with a Poison (1992) reached No. 16 on the UK Singles Chart, and he appeared as a judge on the Belgian edition of X Factor.

In 2017, the band re-released their entire back catalogue through Metropolis Records as Special Remastered Band Editions with bonus B-side tracks and artwork re-designed by Jo-Z Lords - introducing a new generation to the classic Lords of Acid sound.

Now, with Carla Harvey behind the mic and the upcoming album Acid Reign on the horizon, Lords of Acid are poised to enter their most exciting chapter yet. The acid never stops.
